1809 C-1 R4 VG10. Sharpness near VF20 but there are some light contact marks on both sides, including a half dozen fine scratches on the obverse and a couple more inside the wreath. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter brown in protected areas. A splash of reddish brown toning at star 13 is the best identifying mark. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with a clear die crack through the tops of MERICA. Not perfect but still decent for a rare variety that is seldom seen in grades better than VG.

1809 C-1 R4 G6. Sharpness F12 but the lower third of the obverse is covered with fine porosity while the upper 15% of the reverse is covered with moderate corrosion mixed with greenish verdigris. Mostly glossy reddish chocolate brown. No notable signs of contact. MDS Manley state 2.0, with a clear die crack through the tops of MERICA. The date is bold and the legends are clear, although STATES is weakened by isolated roughness.

Just a trace of rub on the highest points from mint state. Sharply struck MDS, Manley state 1.0. The best identifying mark is microscopic planchet clip that weakens a few dentils behind the head and the opposing ones off the stem tip, as struck.

1809 C-4 R2 Large 0 over Small 0 AU50. Mint state sharpness but there is a subtle bend in the planchet. Otherwise this piece is essentially flawless with only a couple microscopic ticks. The obverse is glossy medium chocolate brown with golden tan faded down from mint color around the stars before the portrait. The reverse is mostly frosty tan and medium brown blending to light chocolate. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The Small 0 inside the Large 0 is sharp.

1809/6 C-5 R1 9 over Inverted 9. PCGS graded AU-55. Frosty medium brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. The only marks are a small spot of darker steel toning between star 2 and the throat and another under the wreath ribbon. Nicely struck E-MDS Manley state 1.0, showing a couple light die cracks on the obverse but with dentils all the way around that side. The repunching on the 9 is clear and the lump under the second A in AMERICA is sharp. Our grade is EF45. The "9 Over Inverted 9" feature is noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 1126) .

1810 C-1 R1 PCGS graded AU55. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown with traces of frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. This piece is flawless except for a tiny planchet void on the rim over the back of the head and at the opposing place on the rim over the U in UNITED (as struck). Nicely struck MDS with the reverse rotated 55 degrees CCW. This piece is plated in the first edition of the Cohen book on half cents to illustrate the variety. A beautiful half cent with a nice history. Our grade is AU50. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.

The roughness is strongest on the reverse where traces of verdigris can be found using a glass. The only notable contact mark is a horizontal nick on the curl at the bottom of the neck. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0, with the reverse rotated 15 degrees CW.

The only marks, and they are trivial, are a few ticks on the rim including a tiny rim bruise at star 11. LDS Manley state 3.0. A vertical die crack reaches from the dentils over the head down to the curl on the neck. In addition the reverse is rotated 165 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation. A nice half cent, close to EF45. Our grade is EF40+, close to EF45. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.
